  • You're so much stronger than your excuses.
  • "Nothing can dim the light that shines from within." - Maya Angelou.
  • "Instead of focusing on all the reasons you CAN’T do something, you need to focus on all the reasons you CAN do something." ~ Matt McLeod
Many moons back when we were growing up, our mums would use rhetorical statements to suggest one thing when they literally meant a different thing. I remember one time I was sent to our local shop to buy sugar and mum was quite clear on the statement she made," Kuja nayo ukizungusha imwagike tukukunywe". In reality, that was a daring statement. True to her words, play got into my head, and I came rocking the carrier bag up and down, the next thing I saw was flying sugar particles. You and I know what followed - premium tears. Those were the days when you could receive whipping for crying after being beaten and for not crying after the beating. I'm not sure if this was discipline instilled but one thing I know is our parents were going through tough times and some of these beatings were either a display of their frustrations and turmoil of the past or the present.

In a fast-paced world full of hardships, tough economic times, unemployment, and the most recent pandemics, it's easy to lose self and get engulfed in the mystery of frustrations. In recent times, we have experienced insane highs and rock bottom lows. We are so busy trying to figure things out and our bodies feel numb already. It indeed feels like we are in a donkey carriage heading to neverland. What if we gave ourselves permission to do one thing that lights up our soul, just for the sake of our well-being as part of our self-care routine? When was the last time you thought about your mental well-being and chose yourself?

Choosing ourselves is not selfish, Nah. It is drawing finer lines that depict our boundaries and sticking to what we believe in. It's replacing doubt with faith and holding a belief that we shall rise despite the current situation. It lifts the banner of positivity higher than our worries. It's marrying our goals and remaining committed to our well-being. Take one conscious thought out of the frustrations of life and decide to choose you. Approve yourself with passion and feel the power that comes from focussing on what ignites your spirit.

Don't put your happiness in other people's hands, they'll drop it at any available chance. Fill your cup first with self-acceptance, then fall in love with yourself over and over again because you are the only person you'll spend the rest of your life with. Follow your star and let it shine to the deepest part of your soul. Believe in the power of love but never beg for it. Never beg someone to be with you, or beg for attention, time, or even space. Those who want you will fight for you. Meanwhile, choose people who lift you even when you have self-doubt. Believe in the kind of love that doesn't demand you to prove your worth, the free-flowing and simple.

Lastly, this is for you who have had a rough week and nothing seems to fall in place. You seem to be under constant stormy clouds and all around seem invisible. Your heart skips at the sound of glasses tinkling and horns hooting. I wish you nothing but peace. Try to choose yourself, by first forgiving your past failures, embracing the process and learning, then rise, dust off and keep moving. Move past your fears and worries and choose inner peace. There's glory in loving yourself, just the way you are. With all the flaws and the scars. You are your own true hero. You are the only one who knows the battles you've fought and how you've conquered them. Even this time, you will win! If you are given a chance to choose again - choose you!
